Q: How do I move to a client/server environment?

Apr 06 2009

Answered by: Chris Lindsay     Ask a question

Small companies (for example, with five to seven users) can comfortably get by as computers can be connected via a network without the use of a server. However, moving to a client/server environment is essential as your company expands.

When transferring to a client/server environment, hardware should be obtained from a trusted and reputable supplier. The provider must also ensure satisfactory follow-up care to provide advice on the set-up process.

Always ensure you have clearly planned what your server requirements are before purchasing. This might be an emphasis on file sharing, the web or mail services.

Ultimately, moving to a server environment means that everything is centralised, and the maintenance and management functions of a server represent a great improvement to working methods.
