Technology and small business

Aug 24 2009

A mobile phone or laptop can greatly enhance your efficiency in processing information and dealing with customers/clients.

On an operational level too, it’s worth standing back and thinking about what a computer can do for your business. After all, a range of business tasks can be carried out, such as:

Accounting

There are a number of software packages to help you as your business grows, including some simple applications designed especially for small businesses.

When it comes to financial control and planning, the programs range from cash management to sophisticated systems for working out forecasts and updating them at regular intervals.

A software program can considerably simplify the task of forming and updating cash flow and profit-and-loss and help you to manage your cash. Some banks now give business planning software and accounting software away free as part of an introductory package.

Databases

If you have a large list of potential customers and send out mail shots or want to record information about them, using database software cam improve your efficiency dramatically.

This becomes especially important as sales methods move toward direct selling, often by mail or telephone. If you are adopting a strategy of building a group of customers with similar needs and interests, and are developing products to meet their requirements, database software is the only answer. However, do note that you must comply with the Data Protection Act.

Stock control

This can be important for retail outfits. Some computer systems link up to the cash till, so that levels of stock and knowing when to reorder are worked out automatically.

Selling

The internet may be a suitable medium for selling your product, in which case you will need to set up a website.

Conclusion

It’s crucial to have a fast computer as otherwise you’ll be twiddling your thumbs and wasting time. Buy one off the shelf that comes with ready-made packages, such as word processing, spreadsheet accounts packages, database software, email and access to the internet. But if you know that particular aspects are more important to you, choose the specific software and install it yourself.
