Q: We publish links to other firms on our website. Is it advisable to include a disclaimer on our site to avoid possible legal issues and, if so, what should it cover?

Links to other companies generally don’t cause any problems, however legal issues do exist around some connections. There are rules around defamation, trademark infringements and passing off someone else’s work as your own, so if you are concerned about these issues in your business it may be worth talking to your lawyer about the legal implications.

A simple website disclaimer should cover most issues. Find a company you admire and copy their disclaimer, making sure to change clauses or items that may not be relevant to you. Similarly, make sure company emails have a template disclaimer at the end - just to to be safe.
