Q: I would like to start a business on the internet. Can you tell me what I should do as a first step?

The increasing availability of low-cost broadband connections and increasing consumer confidence in online security means the number of people shopping online is growing rapidly. Internet businesses provide many business advantages including having a sales outlet that is open 24 hours, access to an enormous client base via search engines and fewer overheads.

However, as internet use increases, so will the number of internet businesses, which means more competition in the market. As with any new business idea, you need to do your homework. It is essential that you conduct market research into the viability of your business idea as well as produce a detailed business plan to help you set your business aims and objectives, as well as secure finance.

As an internet business your domain name will be key to your success. A domain name is your identity on the internet and is a crucial part of your marketing activity. It should therefore be distinctive and easy to remember while clearly representing your company image and the products or services that you offer. Once you’ve decided on your domain name, you will need to check it’s free to register. The Better Whois Database is a good tool for this for .com addresses and top level domains, but for .co.uk and UK regional domains you should use Nominet.

Just as important is creating a good quality website. This doesn’t have to be a costly or complicated process; in fact it is the simple, clean and text-based websites that are proving the most effective. You will need to consider the site’s design, structure and navigational properties as well as its search engine and e-commerce capabilities.

Could you please extend the answer to cover the anticipated costs of acquiring and maintaining domain name?

Once acquired, what should you look for in a hosting service provider including space, email addresses, ease of moving, general size offered for a small text based site - not ecommerce or 'etail'.

What are the costs for hosting and updating the site and which computer program is it best to use to design it?

Just a few pointers please, as I'm in the process of formulating a business plan and need this generic info to assist.

Many thanks to any participants.
