Where did you get the idea?
Myself and Richard Garth Jones [co-founder] were discussing the possibility of starting a recycling company and hit on the idea. Richard’s background is in the environmental field and mine’s in construction and building, so our separate skills complement the business. In July 2008 it started with just the two of us; now we have a team of five.
Where did you get the money?
We had assistance from some of the local authority grants available in Burnley and managed to get a grant of around £10,000. The rest was through our joint savings. To begin with we didn’t pay ourselves a great deal, and worked very long hours.
How have you marketed yourselves?
We’ve done nothing significant as yet, but as we have started a joint venture with West Coast Energy we will be doing more to promote the business. Most of our custom initially came from being a government-accredited microgeneration installer, as we were listed on its website. We also rely on word of mouth.
Was it difficult to set up in 2008?
Yes because it was during the start of the recession, but we felt confident in what we were doing. We worked hard to understand exactly what we were providing for our clients and researched the markets in detail to find the best equipment and opportunities available.
Where next?
We’re looking to grow our team significantly over the next 12 months and start supplying wind power equipment. We also want to expand into new regions, such as North Wales, Cheshire, the Midlands, and then Scotland.
