Q: I want to start a software company with a development centre based in Thailand and sales and marketing office in UK. Is it a good idea to register as an overseas company rather than a UK one?

If you decide to register your business overseas, say in Thailand, you need to know the local rules and regulations. Unless you speak the language and understand the culture, this could be a minefield.

You might find it easier to start your business initially in the UK, where there is a great deal of help for start-up businesses.  Business Link provide a free and impartial advisory service which can be accessed via the website.

My suggestion is to then talk to someone from UK Trade Invest (UKTI) who will be able to give you more detailed information about setting up a business abroad.  They are the export arm of the Department of Business and Regulatory Reform (BERR).
