Q: How can you begin to nurture a small business? How do you register as a sole trader and where can you get the necessary forms?

Answered by: Philip Wilkinson     Ask a question

Anyone can set up in business as a sole trader, although for certain types of work you may need a licence or permission from your local authority. Restaurants, childminders, cab drivers and street traders, for example, all need to have a local authority licence. Your qualifications and business premises may be inspected beforehand to ensure you comply with regulations

To set yourself up as a sole trader you need to you need to download and complete form CWF1 to register as self-employed - click here .

I have just "clicked here" to get your PDF of "Starting your Business" only to be informed that I have to pay for it. I do not have an issue with this, as I have now paid for it. Only to have it state that it will be mailed to my street address. This is not of any use to me as I wanted to down load it as a PDF now. Please can you either change your comment to reflect this, or tell me how to now down load my purchase?

I have been on a health related benefit for nearly two years. I would like to set up my own business. I have all stock but banks say they cannot help as I have no funds behind me. I would appreciate any suggestions you have.

I work part-time and am also looking to start my own business (as a photographer) - I obviously pay tax and NI through my salary - would I need to include details of my paid work in any tax returns as a sole-trader?

I'm looking into starting a small business selling organic bakery products and fairtrade drinks. I need to know what I have to do in order to legally sell my products! I have already been asked to provide my services at trade fairs and outdoor events but am afraid to accept the pitches in case I am breaking a law. I know I can make a profit immediately but don't want to lose my part time job in the mean time. Do you have any suggestions? Any help will be gold dust to me as my background in business is just favours for friends until now!
