Q: What forms do I need to fill out to become self-employed and what type of paperwork do I need to start a small business?

If you claim to be self-employed, and intend to make your own tax and National Insurance arrangements, –you should download leaflet IR56 on employment status for tax and NICs from the HM Revenue and Customs website at www.hmrc.gov.uk. This will provide guidance on the necessary steps you need to take to establish your employment status. As an alternative you can call your local HM Revenue and Customs office.

With regards to starting a small business, there is some basic information that you will need to retain – tax records and returns, VAT, income, PAYE and NIC, pension planning, health, safety and premises undertakings, It seems a lengthy list but you should be prepared to cover all eventualities.
