The first step if you are thinking about becoming self-employed, is to register with the Inland Revenue. They will be able to ensure all your tax and National Insurance contributions are in line with being both part-time employed and self-employed. You can do this by contacting them on 08459-154515 or register online at www.hmrc.gov.uk/businesses

If you are unsure about your correct employee status ie are you self employed or should your part time employer deduct PAYE and NIC contributions the steps you need to take in order to become self-employed, Business Link for London have provided a check list to determine how ready you are available at www.businesslink4london.co.uk/startups
