Q: I would like to retire from my present job as I am nearly 60. Do you think I could make a fair business out of proof reading?

You won't find it easy to build a business as a freelance proof reader. If all you want to do is to supplement a pension, for example, and to keep yourself busy in an interesting business, proof-reading could suit you. But if you want to rely on the income I would think again.

Proof-reading is a skilled profession and a very attractive one because it is in publishing and can be done from home. But there are many people like you wanting to come into the business.

According to the Society of Freelance Editors and Proof-readers (SFEP), the recommended minimum hourly rates for 2003 are as follows. For simple proof-reading, £16, for copy editing, £17.50, for on-screen copy editing, £19, and for substantial editing and rewriting, £21.50. You can contact the SFEP on 020-7736 3278 or look at their web site, www.sfep.org.uk.
