Q: I would like to set up a book-finding agency from home and have access to a good computer with fax and e-mail. Can you provide any information about setting up such a business including making contact with wholesalers of second-hand books?

There are already a number of organisations offering this sort of service through the web, for example, www.hp-bookfinders.co.uk and www.twiggers.com.This doesn’t mean that you cannot also launch a service, but perhaps you might specialise in a particular market or niche.

You can find out about wholesalers of second-hand books on the internet, such as www.tothetrade.co.uk. It’s also worthwhile checking out the Bookseller, a trade magazine and website (www.thebookseller.com) for the book publishing industry, as it will have information about wholesalers in the UK. You should also find out about auctions in your area and keep an eye on auction sites on the internet such as icollector.com, www.sothebys.com or www.eBay.com. Otherwise, you should build up a list of all the second-hand book shops you know about or can find out about. You can then fax or e-mail requests for books to your list of book shops.
