Q: I noticed a chimney sweep’s van the other day - something I hadn’t seen for years - and wondered if this was a business that could be started easily and cheaply.

The likeliest time of year for fires to be lit is probably Christmas. In general, new homes are being built with chimneys and old chimneys boarded up are being opened up again. This all provides work for chimney sweeps, who provide an important safety role in reducing the likelihood of chimney fires and also the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning by ensuring that flues using old chimneys have the proper ventilation.

Somewhat surprisingly, there are no legal requirements on the training of sweeps or setting up in business. Anyone can buy a set of brushes and start off. But I don’t think this would lead to a very satisfactory service and repeat business (which is the key to a successful chimney sweep business).

There are two trade associations, both of which run training courses. The Guild of Master Sweeps (www.guild-of-mastersweeps.co.uk; 01223-835886) has created the City & Guilds of Master Sweeps, which is a practical assessment. The National Association of Chimney Sweeps (www.chimneyworks.co.uk; 01785-811732) runs courses for beginners and experienced sweeps.
