Q: I have a friend who resides in Turkey and who would like to open a chemist’s shop and live in the UK. Can you help?

Anyone who wishes to practice as a pharmacist has to register with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. If from overseas they will need to comply with the UK standard of pharmacist qualifications. Contact the Overseas Registration Department of the RPSGB (020-7735 9141) to find out if your friend’s qualification would count.

When a pharmacist shop is opened, the RPSBG will need to check that the premises meet a certain standard, and to dispense NHS prescriptions, they need to contact the local health authority to obtain what is effectively a licence. If there is no need for further dispensing chemists in the area, the authority wouldn’t be given, and would indicate that if a shop was set up it wouldn’t be financially viable.
