Q: I’d like to set myself up as a record/CD retailer but am having difficulty finding details of wholesalers. Any suggestions?

The British Association of Record Dealers (BARD) produces factsheets for people like yourself who are considering setting up as a retailer. They recommend you contact wholesalers and manufacturers before you open up to check out terms and services. The wholesalers/manufacturers’ reps can tell you how to open an account, when to order, minimum orders, discounts, expected percentage returns and delivery details.

BARD says that there are three types of distributors: those that are part of major record companies, specialists (such as indie and dance) and large wholesaling operations which carry a large stock and operate a flexible service. One of BARD’s factsheets gives you the names, addresses and phone numbers of several distributors. Contact BARD at Colonnade House, 2 Westover Road, Bournemouth, Dorset BH1 2BY.
