Q: If I become self-employed can I trade under any name?

As a self-employed person you can call yourself anything you wish, but would usually be Joe Bloggs trading as …  I would advise that before choosing a company name you check on Companies House to make sure there is no limited company with a similar name trading in the same activity. This would cause confusion and frustration for both parties.
