RDAs 'can lead businesses'

Oct 24 2008

Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) are in the best position to guide firms and help provide solutions for them, business secretary Lord Peter Mandelson says.

He is set to address the Northern Regeneration and Renewal Summit this afternoon and outline the importance of the agencies in the regions of the UK.

Ahead of the meeting, Mandelson says the organisations will be 'crucial' in the process of helping firms in the credit crunch, stating they are 'the key economic coordination body in each region'.

'The mandate is clear: to ensure that every hardworking business, in every region of the country has the necessary advice and support to help them not just to survive but also to succeed in the difficult times ahead,' he said.

Mandelson is due to praise the role of the RDAs in his speech this afternoon, saying they aided in delivering the solutions for the business package released by the government this week.

He is also expected to discuss how the government can further help small firms and stabilise financial markets.

RDAs were first launched in 1999 and aim to ensure the needs of each region are taken into account and spread economic prosperity.
