New regulations 'will hamper small businesses'

Oct 01 2008

The volume of new legislation being brought in will cost small businesses money to deal with and may overwhelm some firms, an industry body states.

According to the Federation for Small Business (FSB), dozens of new regulations are set to be introduced which could result in hours of work for companies.

It adds that the addition of this paperwork and legislation may 'overwhelm small businesses', with changes set to occur in payroll and health and safety.

John Wright, national chairman of the FSB, says around 20 new regulations will be put in place today, which contradicts previous government pledges on the topic.

'The impact and costs of new regulations affecting small businesses should be properly analysed and adapted accordingly,' he adds.

Wright states in tough economic conditions companies' time would be better spent on remaining 'economically active' rather than 'filling in forms'.

He adds 'the volume of legislation is just getting too much'.

The FSB has recently lobbied the government on other issues for UK businesses, asking prime minister Gordon Brown for automatic rate relief and to reinstate relief on empty commercial property.
