Nation gets rich on diverse business

Sep 23 2008

The UK is getting richer as more people look for diverse ways to use their skills, resulting in a wider variety of companies.

Research from Natwest and Cass Business School finds a new enriched list has emerged which features affluent women in diverse, 'non-traditional' roles.

Professor Scott Moeller from Cass says: 'I think the nation is getting richer...that is richer in the sense that there is really a lot more diversity in terms of what is being offered.'

He adds more unique products are now available on the market, as people set up firms in these areas.

Moeller states when developing the enriched list he was 'impressed at the real dynamism that we saw coming out of people under 35'.

He adds that often these unique firms have a social benefit to the greater economy and 'could be quite important in the future'.

Simon Hopes, head of regional operations at Natwest Private Banking, says many people go into these businesses as they are looking for 'special avenues for their own skills', which in turn let them take control of their career.
