Failure in business 'a lesson learned'

Aug 26 2008

British start-ups need to regard failure as 'a lesson learned' rather than something negative, according to entrepreneur Shaa Wasmund.

Wasmund, the chief executive officer of Bright Station Ventures and developer of Bebo, says there is a more positive attitude toward failure in business in the US.

She believes that American society is in general more entrepreneurial and adds that Britain could benefit if potential start-ups chose to 'embrace' a similar approach.

'No successful business person has got to be successful without having some failure along the way,' Wasmund explains.

She advises aspiring entrepreneurs to turn to their peers for support and to help build both self-belief and confidence.

Being able to learn from those who have already succeeded in enterprise can help inspire and encourage potential businesspeople, Wasmund adds.

The NatWest and RBS Small Business Monitor 200 found that if women in the UK matched American women's business participation levels, the UK would have an extra 900,000 firms.
