Law firm claims business act not good enough

Aug 04 2008

The European Union's Small Business Act for Europe is not bold enough, according to law firm Ward Hadaway.

Speaking to the Northern Echo, lawyer Angelo Basu, head of EU and competition law at the firm says the act is unlikely to provide significant benefits, despite the EU's claims it will simplify red tape for small companies.

He explains: 'The act simply isn't bold enough and there are a lot more things that could be done for small businesses that would have made a bigger impact.'

Mr Basu complains that while it may be easier to claim state aid, the amount of help available has not increased and plans to make it easier to operate cross-boarder will be irrelevant to most small firms.

However, he says efforts to crack down on late payments for goods and services will make a difference.

In contrast to the lawyer's comments, the EU has described the plans as a 'major step to make Europe more entrepreneurial.'
