SMEs to contribute to public contract debate

Jun 11 2008

The government is inviting SMEs to take part in a consultation to discuss ways in which to help more small businesses win public sector contracts.

It is part of the Glover review which will ask small firms, industry groups and public purchasers about their experiences working on, or applying for, public contracts.

The review is to consider how to reduce the barriers obstructing SMEs from winning such contracts and better inform them about the opportunities available.

Exchequer secretary Angela Eagle comments: 'I want to be sure that SMEs enjoy the same access to public sector contracts as their bigger counterparts and I want to learn of their experiences across small and large contract values in shaping future policy.'

To government has a target of commissioning some 30 per cent of public sector contracts to SMEs within the next five years.

According to the Olympic Delivery Authority, around 70 per cent of those firms which have been commissioned to supply work to the Olympic Games are SMEs.

Some 90 per cent of the database which matches up companies with potential projects at the London 2012 games is made up of small firms.
