Female entrepreneur numbers increasing
Nov 06 2007
The number of female entrepreneurs is on the up in many of the UK's regions, a new report has found.
According to research by Prowess, the levels of women who are self-employed have improved in most regions between 2000 and 2005.
Only the South East, the South West and the West Midlands saw a drop in the number of women moving out of employment into self-employment.
Women are more likely to move from employment to self-employment in healthcare, education and community work, the study found.
Dr Rebecca Harding says that more must be done to encourage female entrepreneurship and that women-led businesses 'need more appropriate assistance towards greater long-term sustainability'.
By the end of 2006, the level of female self-employment across the whole country accounted for 27 per cent of all self-employment, according to Prowess' report.
The report has been released in time for National Enterprise Week, which runs from November 12th to the 16th. Prowess has said it will use the week to offer women opportunities to explore the possibilities of becoming entrepreneurs.
