Cutting red tape is mission impossible

Businesses are pessimistic about regulatory burdens being eased
Small business owners doubt the government’s ability to free them from the shackles of red tape.
According to a study by the Forum of Private Business (FPB), just 28 per cent of small and medium sized enterprises believe the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition will make a noticeable difference to the regulatory burden they face.
Some 40 per cent of respondents do not think the coalition will significantly reduce the amount of legislation with which small companies have to comply. The balance of 32 per cent are uncertain.
The vast majority (89 per cent) feel legislators do not understand how regulations affect small employers.
The FPB’s research manager Thomas Parry says: ‘Many small firms feel as though we are now past the point of no return with legislation; there’s a sense that because there is so much of it and it is so deeply embedded in our legal framework, any attempts to tackle it are doomed to failure.’
