A new business support centre could be set to boost the economic prospects of North East England after research highlighted the threat to the region from government spending cuts.

The British Library, NESTA (the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts), Newcastle City Council and Northumbria University have agreed to examine the set up of a new business support centre in the area.

The proposal comes at a time when the North East’s industrial areas are least resilient to economic shocks of all the areas in the UK, according to research by Experian.

The facility will aim to provide entrepreneurs with a comprehensive range of services and information on how to research, develop and protect their business ideas.

Mark Prisk MP, Minister of State for Business and Enterprise, says: ‘The pilot promises to build on the northeast’s proud and innovative history. It will provide residents with tools and information to help them start and grow their own businesses.’
