Entrepreneurs say they are ready to set up shop
Budding entrepreneurs are undeterred by the fragile economy.
More than one-in-five people say they intend to launch a business, with 47 per cent believing they have the right skills to make their idea a success, according to workforce consultancy Kelly Services.
Craig Evans started his media business Gateway this year. He says: ‘It was quite a big leap given the economic situation. However, I wanted the flexibility of running my own business and it was something I’ve always dreamed of doing. The first two months were really hard but it was definitely the right decision.’
John Callagher, general manager at Kelly Services, says: ‘Many of those who lost their jobs as a result of the global economic crisis are seizing the opportunity to reinvent themselves as independent contractors, freelancers and consultants, as well as starting their own businesses. More people are taking charge of their careers and see self-employment as a way to achieve personal and professional success.’
Of the 6,000 people polled, 20 per cent describe themselves as self-employed, with the highest concentration of those based in London (25 per cent).
