Q: How can I get to see objective reviews of a franchise before investing in it? Obviously, the franchise owner is motivated to illustrate their opportunity with only the best performers.

Ask for a list of all franchisees and then select a small number yourself that you would like to speak to or visit. You should try to select someone from a similar background (career and skills) to yours, operating in a similar type of area or territory.

Be aware that most franchise systems will contain a mixture of franchisees and you can learn as much from the underperforming franchisees about what not to do as you can from the high- performing franchisees about what to do.

Existing ones are always the best measure of any franchise system and you should carry out a lot of research with them. If the franchisor is reluctant for you to speak to the existing franchisees you should be wary.
