Q: I am a driving instructor trading under my own name. I want to relaunch with a different name. How does this affect my tax accounts?

If you're operating as an unincorporated business then, from a tax point of view, relaunching with a different name won't make a difference as HMRC is sent your personal tax information through the filing of the Self-Assessment tax return. This will continue without change. The point being that you as the individual is the taxable person. There will also not be any change to the filing deadlines, which under Self-Assessment are 31 October for paper filing and 31 January for electronic filing.

In the UK even if the business were run as a company or partnership they will be some company law and partnership law requirements but from a tax point of view the tax filing would continue as before.

You can obtain further information from the HMRC website at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/individuals/index.shtml.
