Q: How do I register for VAT?

Nov 24 2009

Answered by: Marc Barber     Ask a question

Registering for VAT is relatively simple, it means completing a VAT registration form which can be done on the HMRC website.

However, it can take some time for the registration to be processed as following various well publicised VAT frauds, HMRC spend quite a bit of time establishing which are genuine.

In terms of recovering the VAT this is done through netting the VAT cost off against VAT that you charge to your customers, on your first VAT return.  Such VAT returns will normally run on a quarterly basis, with the period ends not necessarily coinciding with the tax year end.
