Outlook improves for SME manufacturers

Aug 03 2009

The decline in orders and output for the UK’s small and medium-sized manufacturers is easing, according to a survey from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

Some 51 per cent saw the volume of total new orders fall in the three months to July, while 17 per cent reported a rise. The resulting balance of minus 34 per cent is an improvement on the previous quarter’s balance of minus 51 per cent, which was the worst figure since the survey began in 1988.

Russel Griggs, chairman of the CBI’s SME Council, says: ‘Business conditions remain difficult for the UK’s small and medium-sized manufacturers. Orders and output are still falling, but things aren’t quite as gloomy as they were three months ago.’

Of the 480 SMEs surveyed, a balance of five per cent were optimistic about export prospects – the highest amount since April 2007.

Last week the government launched a £150 million package to help manufacturers take advantage of emerging technologies.
