Q: How can I obtain an official order number after the event? We have printed an advert and are now unable to contact the person who placed the order and the company won't pay our invoice without one.

I think you are talking about a purchase order. Did the person who placed the order for the advertisement have the authority on behalf of the company to do so? I can’t quite understand why you can’t contact that person. If they still work in the company, and the commission was genuine, then you should be able to obtain a Purchase Order through them.

Otherwise, you have to look at what was agreed between you in writing. If you had a written agreement on headed letter as proof of the order then you should be able to get a formal Purchase Order either from the person in question or from someone in their department.
