Intellectual property 'expensive and complicated' for SMEs
Nov 27 2007
Intellectual Property (IP) is a "difficult area" for SMEs that is often seen as being "quite expensive and complicated", claims a leading industry body.
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) believes new SMEs are too consumed with making their business ideas work to prioritise affording their business idea with IP protection.
Simon Briault, press officer for the FSB, says: 'In the early stages that's something that small businesses often find it hard to prioritise. Not just because of time, but also money – intellectual property lawyers don't come cheap.'
He adds that many businesses that start off in traditional industries should also bear IP in mind.
It may only be when a business moves into different areas that IP issues come into play.
Ultimately there are no hard or fast rules but each SME should look into protecting their business when it is viable for them to do so, he states.
IP laws confer exclusive rights on an idea or subject so it cannot be claimed to be the product of somebody else or another business. Patent, copyright and trademarks are all legally approved ways of protecting an idea.
