Regional agency criticised over failure to promote funding schemes
Aug 01 2007
Regional development agency Advantage West Midlands (AWM) has been accused of failing to provide sufficient information for local firms on where they can go to apply for the various government and EU funds available to support and stimulate their continued growth.
An official investigation headed by prominent local businessmen suggests that AWM had failed to effectively communicate the full range of investment opportunities available to West Midlands businesses, reports the Birmingham Post.
That perceived failure comes despite the fact that AWM set up its Regional Finance Forum in 2001, specifically to advise local firms on suitable sources of wider business funding.
'A key theme underlying this review is the lack of awareness of not only the Regional Finance Forum but also the regional funds and finance initiatives that are available and we believe that this must be addressed in a consistent and systematic way as a matter of urgency,' says the report.
An AWM spokesman responded quickly to the criticism, citing multi-million pound investment figures since RFF was set up and adding that hundreds of firms are already benefiting from the agency's Access to Finance initiatives.
