Flood warning for SMEs

Mar 15 2005

Small businesses are being urged to assess their risk of flooding, through a new online guide from the Environment Agency.

With a reported 175,000 businesses at risk of flooding in England and Wales, and the implications of such events potentially devastating on many levels, the agency has launched its new Online Flood Preparation Guide. This aims to highlight some of the key considerations for business owner/managers, as some 42 per cent of companies affected by flooding incur costs in excess of £50,000.

Finding out whether or not you are at risk is just the first in a series of steps, according to the agency. Other important considerations include "finding out if flood warnings are available in your area", establishing plans "to protect property and minimise financial risks" and looking to "ensure the safety of all staff members and visitors".

Aside from flagging up these points, the new online resource also provides a guide to flood planning – alongside a series of checklists, tips and a library of downloadable materials relating to evacuation procedures, details of flood insurance and business recovery options.

"Preparing for flood makes good business sense. Even a relatively minor flood can result in business disruption, staff problems and sometimes hefty recovery costs," Environment Agency chief executive Barbara Young cautions.
