Set up a cost-effective direct mail service
Jan 31 2003
An interactive direct mail service for small businesses has been launched by the Royal Mail, to enable companies with limited resources to conduct high quality direct mail campaigns.
The service, DM Online, makes it possible for users to develop a direct mail campaign from conception to mailing, through 4 stages: budgeting; creation; lists; and production.
Tools in the budgeting section will help work out the number of mailing pieces possible on a set budget and the budget needed for a set number of mailing pieces. It is also possible to approximate the likely sales that can be achieved.
Once the budget issues have been sorted, the creation of the campaign can begin. Here you choose the format of your mailing, for example, A4 and A5 letters or leaflets, or even postcards. A demo section of the site gives you the opportunity to test different formats and images and upload your own logos and pictures.
The third part of the service will help you to build and clean a mailing list, using the Mailing Preference Service, and also has data on how to buy and compile a list.
The production section has links to print suppliers and a print proofing facility. Once that step is complete, the list can be uploaded to the service and the campaign can be sent out.
For more information, go to www.dm-online.co.uk. The free demo system gives an idea of how the process can work. Costs for using the service vary depending on the size and format of the mailing.
