Government to reward e-commerce entrepreneurs

A small business will have the chance to win a £40,000 top prize in a competition run by the Government. Overall, £126,000 of prize money is up for grabs in the event open to UK-based organisations with less than 250 employees.
The 2002 E-commerce Awards are being organised by UK online for business, a partnership between Government and industry which promotes the use of information and communications technologies to small businesses, and InterForum, a not-for-profit membership organisation that helps British companies to trade electronically.
The event’s organisers aim to recognise those enterprises that have implemented e-commerce and e-business strategies, either web-based or not, and have achieved a “real and demonstrable success” from doing so.
The competition is organised on a regional basis into four categories, with the regional winner of each category then going through to the national final. An overall winner is picked from the four national category winners.
Winners benefit from a share of the prize money, either on a regional or a national level. However, Philip Flaxton, chief executive of InterForum, says organisations short-listed on a regional basis, will also benefit from coverage in the regional press, and should they go on to the national round, they could receive national press coverage as well.
This will probably be based on case studies of the entrants, so providing examples of best practice for other SMEs, Flaxton added.
The four categories are ‘Voluntary & Community’, ‘Micro Business’ (for organisations with under 10 employees), ‘E-Trading’ and ‘E-Business’. The awards are free to enter, but entrants must be able to show they have achieved tangible gain from using the internet. Each category has further eligibility requirements.
