Some 71 per cent of UK businesses want to improve their presence on social networking sites in 2011, although only one quarter are making it a business priority this year.

Of the businesses that aim to improve their online presence this year, 15 per cent will look at creating specific social media roles, while 65 per cent say they will consider hiring freelancers to carry out the work.

This is set to create thousands of short-term vacancies, generating a ‘boom’ in demand for social media skills, according to the 2011 Freelancers Trends Report published by OfficeCavalry.com.

Andy Turner, founder of the freelance portal, says, ‘Social media and online reputation management is changing the way organisations do business.’

The survey of 1,000 businesses shows that the UK lags behind the US when it comes to using social media as a business tool.

Only half of the 1,000 UK businesses surveyed use social media compared to 90 per cent of companies in the US.

When there are important business decisions to be made, the Internet often takes second place, because the owner lacks the necessary knowledge

I agree with the previous comment. This is why new companies are forming, with this exact knowledge.
