Businesses are looking to ramp up marketing for the new year, research finds.

According to a study of 925 managers by social media solution company StrongMail, around 93 per cent plan to increase or maintain marketing budgets in 2011, with just over half looking to spend more.

Only 7 per cent plan to decrease budgets for marketing, less than the figure of 11 per cent reported in last year’s survey.

Email marketing (65 per cent) and social media (57 per cent) will be the top areas of marketing spend in 2011.

Among social media initiatives, Facebook (35 per cent) is the biggest priority, followed by viral/referral marketing programmes (22 per cent) and marketing via Twitter (21 per cent).
