BCC: Exporting is key to recession survival
Jun 09 2009
The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) is working with the minister for trade and investment to encourage more small firms to export.
David Frost, director general of the group, has joined forces with Lord Davies to encourage companies, especially small and medium-sized businesses, to expand into overseas markets to survive the recession.
Frost comments: 'Exporting is vital to the future growth of the UK economy. Not just in manufacturing but services as well.'
He also points out that being in European Union means small enterprises have access to a market of almost 500 million consumers, which is not being exploited enough by British firms.
Lord Davies adds: 'For UK businesses, winning sales and beating the recession is too important to leave to chance.'
The minister also says that research from UK Trade & Investment shows the majority of British companies do not recognise the full benefits of exporting and overestimate the risks involved.
Earlier this year, the Scottish government pledged to support businesses wanting to export by launching an £11 million initiative to extend the reach of the Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service.
