Q: What do you do if you get some negative publicity about your business? Is it wise to try to spin it the other way in your marketing material or will this just look like you’re protesting too much?

I guess it depends what the negative publicity is about and what the spin is you are making. If you refer to it in your marketing literature you will only risk drawing more attention to it and the people who didn’t read about it will find out.
If it is negative press publicity, you might be able to counter it by working at getting some positive press shortly afterwards. You could send in some positive case studies, achievements or results you have achieved concentrating on building a positive profile. It also might be worth exploring where the negative publicity came from and if it is correct or not, I am not an expert in the legalities of this but you might find you have a case if it is unfounded, and then you could get some press about winning the case, giving you a chance to put the record straight.
