Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the practice of building a website and its content to maximise the chances of getting high rankings on Google and other search engines.
Assuming you don't want to outsource this function for your business, you should take a look at Google's own SEO guide for some starter tips and then consider building a flexible site such as a blog or a Squidoo page to see how content and links effect visibility on the search engines. Doing it yourself is the best way to learn.
The British Computer Society is a not for profit organisation supporting the IT sector, they have frequent meetings and several specialist groups for sharing knowledge and ideas. Getting involved with and networking with others with an IT interest through an organisation like this will provide the opportunity to gain a better understanding of how websites work and will be lower cost than the paid for online training available. Other mentoring services offered will often end up costing more than simply outsourcing the work.
