Q: I have finished a guide to working abroad. Can you advise me where I might advertise this and how to go about it?

I’m at a loss to know quite in what format this is available. Is it a report? Have you had it printed as a booklet? In all fairness, I should warn you that self-publishing may not be a profitable venture. Have you considered approaching a publisher? Why not get hold of the Artists and Writers Year Book (ask your local reference library). This will have the names and addresses of agents who might deal on your behalf with a publisher and the names and addresses of publishers themselves.

Look to see what sort of books each company publishes. If you find a non-fiction publisher with a gap in its range that could be filled by your guide, you could approach them directly. Again I should warn you that many publishers return manuscripts unseen and unread. In any case, you should not send the manuscript, but send a synopsis or contents, plus a sample of your writing.

If you really want to try and sell copies yourself, look to see if there are any magazine or websites specialising in writing for people who want to work abroad (for magazines look in BRAD, which you should also find in your local reference library). You might find a box ad (or strip for a website) cheap enough to allow you to cover your costs with sales of your guide. You could also consider setting up your own web site, but this is only an option if you would be able to do this yourself or find someone to do it very cheaply for you. Really your best bet is to find a publisher.
