Q: I am interested in typing up manuscripts for authors, but have advertised to no avail. How can I contact the ‘right’ people?

I suspect that this idea is not going to work. Publishers these days often specify that authors provide their manuscripts on disk in a particular software format and most authors will write straight into a computer. I do for example. The days when authors wrote by hand and got someone else to type the manuscript up have gone. However, you could contact the Society of Authors (www.societyofauthors.org; 020-7373 6642) for advice.
A more fruitful source of work for you, I think, would be the large number of self-employed consultants now working from home. You may find some in your local area have overflow work to pass on to you, such as reports or a big batch of letters. You may need to invest in a dictation play-back system, as a common way of working would be for them to dictate their work on tape. Before you do this, try advertising in local newsagents or a local paper or magazine to see the level of response. You can also find out from your local bank if they have any business clubs or networking arrangements and make full use of these opportunities.
