Email is not always the best way

Oct 10 2008

Attempting to settle disputes and problems by email is not an effective way to communicate in a business enviroment and can often make things worse, says an expert.

Bronia Szczygiel, a senior partner at Impact Factory, which is a communications training company, says while messaging is a great tool for modern communication it has its flaws.

'Unfortunately, rather than solving issues, email can often add to them as there aren't any of the 'soft' skills attached to an email,' Szczygiel adds.

She said you cannot infer different emotion from an email message and people tend to be more formal when communicating through the medium.

Another issue Szczygiel raises is that it is easier for employees to lie across email, as opposed to doing so face-to-face.

She says the visual and tonal clues of lying are missing in an email, making it harder to detect an untruth.

However, research from Dimension Data, an IT services and solution provider, found email is now the most popular form of communication in the workplace, having overtaken telephony.
