Better health and safety info could save £300m, BERR says
Aug 07 2008
Improving the health and safety information available to small firms could save them £300 million in total, the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) claims.
According to the government body, safety in work environments could be improved with the provision of advice, which could be given over the phone to those working in low-risk environments.
Health and safety consultants and local authority inspectors should be given more efficient resources, the report recommends, which would the allow them to free up more time to concentrate on inspecting high-risk areas.
The average company has been found to spend 20 hours each year on health and safety and the government predicts cutting this figure by just five hours could mean a saving of £150 million for low-risk firms.
Donna Kennedy, writing in the Western Mail, says children should be taught health and safety in school to help them when they get into the workplace.
