Energy efficiency 'not an issue' for SMEs

SMEs are unlikely to consume significant amounts of energy on computing and IT needs, claims a business expert.

The Green Consultancy says that businesses are increasingly interested in energy and making energy savings but can make these cuts in other areas of their business outside of computing.

Michael Webb, spokesperson for the Green Consultancy, says: 'For a small organisation the amount of energy they're using in computers is probably not that great.'

He adds that any SME looking to reduce their emissions should have 'an energy audit done which will identify ways in which they can save energy'.

The cost of saving can vary from business to business but if the payback is more than two years then businesses will be deterred from undertaking it, claims Mr Webb.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Small Businesses has claimed that in 2008, 'firms are more environmentally aware and socially responsible than ever before', with 83 per cent actively engaged in waste minimisation and recycling.
