Small recyclers to win awards

Small businesses that have made an extra effort to improve recycling rates and reduce waste are being invited to enter the National Recycling Awards 2006.

Now in their eighth year, the awards are widely regarded as a stamp of ‘green’ excellence. Entries are open to any organisation, community group or firm that plays an active part in the recycling process or that helps to reduce the environmentally harmful effects of UK business waste.

This year a brand new award category is up for grabs – Electrical and Electronic Recycler of the Year – designed to raise awareness of the importance of re-using and recycling electrical goods, whilst rewarding worthwhile contributions to the cause.
Additionally, there are 13 other award categories, variously intended to highlight special contributions in retail recycling initiatives, commitment to health and safety, innovative community projects and the unsung heroes of the recycling world.

Jane Rayner, chair of the judges and group editor for Materials Recycling Week said: ‘The Awards are aimed at rewarding good practice and creativity, as well as developing a network of people who can provide advice to others adopting similar initiatives. Past winners have found that the recognition of winning a National Recycling Award has helped in attaining funding for future development, as well as providing a well-earned boost to staff.’

Winners will enjoy a glamorous black-tie ceremony to be held at the Bournemouth International Centre on 16 November of this year, following the judging by a panel of industry experts.
