FPB: Don't scrap Xmas knees-up

The FPB advises against cancelling the Christmas party
The Forum of Private Business (FPB) has warned that ditching the office Christmas party could alienate workers.
Research this year has suggested that more than half of small businesses are expected to do away with the annual festive bash for staff.
The lobbying group warns managers that depriving staff of their seasonal celebration can disincentivise them to go the ‘extra mile' for their company in future.
The FPB adds that, while cash may be in short supply for many SMEs, festive frolics don't have to cost the earth.
The Forum's chief executive Phil Orford says, ‘The benefits of an annual get-together cannot be underestimated. They encourage communication, motivate staff, and reward them at a time when other perks, such as pay rises and bonuses for many just aren't an option.’
The FPB has come up with some top tips to boost morale among employers in the absence of a party, including asking staff for alternative ideas and putting them to a vote, using discount vouchers for group meals, and adorning the office with elaborate Christmas decorations.
Showing staff you recognise their hard work can mean more than any gift or monetary bonus, and talking to each member of staff about their holiday plans also goes a long way, adds the organisation.
Organising a ‘Secret Santa', where participants each buy a present for another member of staff, is also a morale-boosting measure that doesn’t cost anything.
