No help for going green

Apr 06 2010

Small businesses want to become more energy-efficient but say they lack the support to go green.

Some 57 per cent of businesses believe that energy efficiency can provide cost savings but say there is insufficient advice available to help them become more environmentally-friendly, according to a poll from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

David Caro, chairman of the small businesses environment committee at the FSB, says: ‘[We] believe that the government needs to give small businesses the incentive to embrace the low carbon agenda rather than force them through heavy handed regulation. We are calling for more tailored advice and support for SMEs so that businesses can maximise energy efficiency and the use of smart metering.’

Of the 10,000 small businesses surveyed, 57 per cent say they have changed the way their business operates because of concerns about climate change, with 47 per cent saying they recycled waste and 24 per cent buying energy efficient appliances.
