The majority of companies say their main reason for implementing environmentally-friendly policies is to improve their corporate image.

Some 71 per cent of business leaders admit that carbon reduction policies are primarily driven by public relations, according to a report from the Carbon Trust, IBM and Hitachi.

Almost one-third say they do not yet have a coherent strategy in place to address energy consumption issues, a 7 per cent rise on 2009 figures.

Sumir Karayi, CEO of energy consultancy1E, says: ‘Organisations have a duty, more than just a moral obligation, to become more energy efficient. Green IT initiatives can actually save organisations money. This should be the key driver, above and beyond reputation.’

Of the 542 business executives surveyed, 52 per cent believe that the ‘jury is still out’ on the seriousness of climate change.
