Workers more green at home

Employees are bottling out of being green at work
Employees admit that they are less environmentally conscious in the office than at home.
While 77 per cent say they make an effort to reduce energy consumption at home, 55 per cent admit to not bothering at work, according to a study from EDF Energy.
Some 42 per cent of respondents claim forgetfulness as the reason for their behaviour, while 21 per cent do not believe their actions make a difference to the environment. A further 18 per cent say they are not concerned about saving money for their employers.
Of the 3,000 workers surveyed, 70 per cent say they leave lights on, 84 per cent fail to turn computers off and 80 per cent admit to leaving the air conditioning on.
Laurent Mineau, head of energy services at EDF Energy, says: ‘Turning off lights seems like such a small thing to do, yet it’s important to remember that lighting can represent 20-40 per cent of a company’s electricity bill.’
The number of small businesses taking action to improve their energy and water efficiency has doubled in two years, claims a survey by environmental guidance website NetRegs.gov.uk.
